The Enablers of Progress

How India is building systems that last

underline

India's development narrative is defined not just by what's changing, but what is making change possible. Progress has been quietly enabled by the foundational work taking place behind the scenes—the various enabling shifts that have transformed aspirations into outcomes. Across states and sectors, progress is taking shape through intent. From AI in clinics to clean water in villages, from women managing money on mobile phones to fathers sharing the care of their children.

Each of our Aksha editions' stories in 2025 centers have, as a result, been centered around significant moments of progress. They showcase how progress is unfolding, enabled by technology, widened through access, strengthened by sustainability, accelerated by partnerships, and held together by systems. Let’s look at five enablers that have made progress real and kept it in motion throughout the year.

Technology enabling progress

underline

Technological innovation is leading the way. Artificial intelligence tools in healthcare shorten diagnosis times, offer data to doctors, and bring precision to primary care. Digital public infrastructure expands women’s access to financial services, giving them control over savings, payments, and participation in the economy. Parallelly, tech-driven solutions in farming and sanitation enable safer and smarter systems. Technology thus opens new pathways, making access possible for all.

Access that reaches everyone

underline

Access is what makes progress real. Toilets that are safe and usable. Vaccines that reach every child. Family-planning services that respect choice and agency. Programs focused on eliminating neglected tropical diseases that are reducing long-standing health burdens.

This, in turn, is enabled by frontline workers, reliable supply chains, and community trust. When services arrive consistently, people begin to count on them. As access expands, it nurtures a culture of responsibility. Clean environments lead to a healthier population; informed farmers produce safer food; and consistent health delivery ensures stronger immunity. Simply put, sustenance makes sure people always have access, now and in the future.

Sustaining progress

underline

Sustainability is emerging as the quiet force behind long-term change. In agriculture, farmers are combining traditional knowledge with modern tools to grow food that is resilient to climate stress. In sanitation, circular approaches are turning waste into a resource, protecting both health and the environment. Additionally, in nutrition, local foods are fostering diet diversity while preserving culture.

Sustainability protects what progress depends on and ensures progress does not dwindle with time. As communities adopt practices that replenish, progress begins to renew itself.

Partnerships multiplying impact

underline

Partnerships facilitate new ideas and innovation, while reliable systems turn them into long-term success. Progress is compounding because partnerships between governments and innovators, communities and institutions; public systems and private expertise are deepening and growing. Immunization drives, too, are expanding through coordination across states. Financial inclusion is improving through collaboration between regulators, platforms, and self-help groups. Further, disease elimination is seeing higher rates of progress because data, research, and delivery are increasingly being shared.

Partnerships are doing more than supporting programs. They are aligning intent. They are turning individual efforts into collective momentum.

Systems enable progress

underline

As partnerships mature, systems begin to gain strength. Digital health registries, telemedicine, nutrition dashboards, and farmer-service portals are some examples of systems that make progress measurable.

This is also how progress becomes bankable and visible as development is now increasingly embedded in structures that can scale, adapt, and endure.

Across all these enablers, one pattern is clear: progress does not move in straight lines. Each part depends on others, and together they make development self-sustaining. Every Aksha story this year captures one aspect of this motion. Together, they show how progress is being built intentionally and collectively.

Over the past year, the Aksha newsletter has followed progress at its roots, tracing not only what is changing, but what is enabling that progress across the length and breadth of the country. In the New Year, we hope to continue this momentum, tracing the path of change, as it blazes a trail across Health, Sanitation, Financial Inclusion, Agricultural development, and Gender Equality. Come join us as we set forward to renew our dialogue on India’s unique story of progress.
